Mullins 1- This packet is the first one had notes and 3 graphs for which we can do calculations for P, V, T, and Internal Energy (U).

Mullins 2 - This packet is similar to Mullins 1. it includes notes & some graphs with calculations.

College Board Packet - This packet is entirely notes. No homework assignment stuff at all.

These three packets should have all of the information you need over break. Your book might be helpful and some links and simulations might also offer some help, but the information is all included in Mullins 1, Mullins 2, and the College Board Packet.

Part One:

Mullins 1:

Complete the charts in Mullins 1. This includes all P, V, T, and total Internal Energy (U). These are all variables at a specific point. State Variables.

You should be able to find these state variables (P, V, T, U, n (or N)) in multiple ways. Try finding total internal energy (U) one way for point A, a different way for point B, and a third way for point C. The more ways you can be comfortable, the better off you are. These multiple routes to solution are often checked by the college board folks.

Part Two:

Mullins 2:

Note that when they talk about the First Law of Thermodynamics (and this is a BIG one), we will actually choose to let the chemists have their way. We will use their choice for delta U = Q + W. The college board chose this because they have more students take AP Chem then AP Physics (in that order) than AP PHysics then AP Chem. Since a lot of college board kids are used to deltaU=Q+W, we stick with it in AP Physics so those students don't get too confused about system choices.

In Mullins 2, calculate the state variables (P, V, T, n or N, and U). Then calculate the values in the second table (except the entropy and efficiency values).

Part Three:

Read, review, and study the ideas behind Adiabatic processes and Isochoric processes and how they relate to the deltaU, Q, & W values. That should help a lot.

See if you can find the way problems are worded when they try to approximate to Adiabatic and Isothermal processes.

Read to understand what a Carnot cycle is.

Read to have a good feeling for Entropy.

Read to understand WHY a clockwise cycle is a (refridgerator / heat engine).

Read to understand WHY a counter-clockwise cycle is a (refridgerator / heat engine).

The link below includes several videos of lectures at a college with a somewhat acceptable history. I haven't viewed them all, but the parts I have viewed, do appear to have some helpful content.

This simulation includes several well guided questions to give you a really good conceptual understanding of what is happening. This is my preferred approach when we are not 2 weeks behind schedule. Highly recommened.

Recall that the material on thermal expansion IS ap test worthy, but we are moving over it fairly quickly (talked about it).

You were assigned the Gas Laws State Variables worksheet. Hopefully that went ok.

Review the Internal Energy and Kinetic Molecular Theory material in the book. We need to UNDERSTAND the KE & U stuff so we can do some of the heavy lifting that comes in chapter 12. If we just know the formulas or can look up the formulas for KE & U, we will be in some trouble when we get to Ch 12.

Review the Force --> Pressure stuff so you can believe it (not necessarily reproduce it).

In Class Today:

Go to the PhET site for Gas Properties. Run the simulation and be patient for it to open.

In your Lab Notebook (this should be relatively quick - certainly just a one day deal):

Purpose: Determine how to use the measurement tools to determine how you would measure and calculate things like: Volume, Pressure, n, N, Temperature, Work, KE, U.

Note that I am only asking you to determine HOW to make these measurements. Be sure that you figure out HOW, record HOW so that you can use this later.

Homework:

Record WHAT these things are: Temperature, Average Kinetic Energy, Total Kinetic Energy, Internal Energy.

Then record how they are different.

Solve for U as many ways as you can.

Do PS 10.2:

Ch 10: #27, 28, 31, 47, 49

Extra Credit if you find neat examples of Gas Laws stuff to post. They are out there. Think about it.

Review the Force --> Pressure stuff so you can believe it (not necessarily reproduce it).

Review the Molecular Interpretation of Temperature so you can discuss it & feel good about your level of understanding.

Note:

AP folks consider all of Ch 10 fair game. The expansion materials are left for you to do on your own.

Ch 12: All of ch 12.. This is where we have some heavy lifting. 10 & 11 set the stage for ch 12

Review the 2nd thermo cycles packet.

Check to make sure we are properly analyzing the sign for Work done TO THE GAS.

Do draw the sketches of the cycle (like the one that is on the front cover of the packet) for each cycle. Note that some cycles go clockwise, some go counter clockwise. One of these directions uses Q to do W. The other uses W to pump Q. Try to figure out which is which.

Pair up to work on AP Thermo questions. The thermo questions we have been working on are from 2005 --> 2007 exams. These exams are posted on the College Board's website.

Recall that we have also been working on the PhET GAS PROPERTIES simulation. Some used their time that class day better than others. Think of this simulation as an online lab. Record data of the gas initially. Call this state A. You should be able to record PVNkT. Note that all of these values are directly recordable from the page with the single exception of V. We can use the meterstick to measure left-to-right length. The top to bottom height will be stated if you click the right buttons. We will ASSUME that the depth of the block-like cylinder is 1. That will make all of this a bit easier.

Once you have the state variables for states A, B, & C, then determine deltaU, Q, W for each step.

Note: The Carnot Cycle efficiency tells us the Maximum Efficiency of an engine cycle. This is always less than 100%.

Note that the Cv, Cp, and gamma factors included in chapter 12, section 2 are fair game for the ap test.

The test on Monday will include 1 or 2 free response questions and a m.c. section
